VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION
"Vertebral subluxation" or just "subluxation" is the very easily understandable model upon which chiropractic is based. The diagram above shows a section of the spine with two vertebrae (spinal bones) in balance. In this state the nerves exit the spine carrying healthy messages from the brain to the body. The muscles holding the spine in its dynamic tension are in balance and minimal force is required to sustain this state.
When the signals from the brain are allowed to pass through the spine unhindered, healthy cells are produced. Healthy tissues are thus organised and healthy organs are constructed. This means the correct chemicals are produced in each cells, each tissue and thus each organ and homeostasis (chemical balance) exists in the body.
When chemical balance exists we perform at our highest levels at work, in our health, when resting and indeed, in every arena of our lives. Whilst we live in a environment which applies constant physical, chemical and mental stressors we are usually able to adapt to these stressors. The spine in particular is designed to absorb an enormous amount of stress and still return to a state of balance. This is key in order to protect the nerve roots exiting along the length of the spine.

The diagram above shows a subluxated vertebra. In this situation the spine has been unable to adapt any further to external chemical, physical and/or emotional stressor. It is unable to return to its optimal position which means it begins to encroach upon the nerve pathways which exit from the spine. A little like when there is interference to your TV signal or mobile phone signal, the body is no longer getting the whole picture of the message which your brain is transmitting. Involuntary spinal muscles begin to work harder to protect the nerve channels. They tighten in an attempt to correct the subluxation. Inflammation can compound the problem and lead in some (but regrettably not all cases) to pain and discomfort.
Over a period of time – sometimes years or tens of years after the vertebral subluxation first occurs the organisation of the areas of the body which these nerves innervated begins to break down. The cells do not form as they should which results in sub-standard tissues and in turn result in organs which do not form and perform as they should. Chemical balance is lost and ill-health, disease follows. With systems in the body not performing to the level they otherwise could this means that premature death will result. This cannot however be proven scientifically as it is currently impossible to quantify, however the chiropractic principle and common sense tells us that we will live a longer fuller life with pressure off the nervous system than with pressure on the nervous system.
